It started with The Carter Twins.

Wardell and Mozell Carter were two of the most kindest men I knew. They were outstanding Lancaster County citizens who gave back to their community in deeds and kind words.

They were students at Brookvale High School and members of the championship 1969 baseball team. They received their championship rings in 2019.

I was present at the awards ceremony held at Dream Fields, the baseball diamond that once was segregated. Decades later, many people gathered there to witnesss a long overdue event take place. The Twins, in their usual understated and quiet ways, gave me words of encouragement that were much needed that day in 2019.

The words were words of encouragement; to keep achieving despite challenges, to have patience without sacrificing dignity and respect, to help everyone especially the young people.

This is what the Brookvale May Day is about; the legacy of excellence and responsibility to give back to our community, the community that has changed and continues to change. A community that encompasses the Northern Neck region; her sister counties and beyond.

It is with profound pride that I dedicate this event to the People of the Northern Neck in the names of Wardell and Mozell Carter.
